Together with partners on Bonaire and Wageningen Institutes we executed the BONCIRC project to find methods of processing the floating seaweed Sargassum that is a challenge for nature and tourism for the Caribbean Islands and coasts. To follow up these results a plan for small methanisation and composting of relevant substrates has been proposed in combination with several stakeholders of the Island to the Government of Bonaire.
Following the projects conclusions, it is realized that surpluses of organic waste and waste with a higher pollution grade should be treated in another way, also following the goals to stop landfilling by 2028. So investigations brought us to a young developing company in Alkmaar(NL): DOPS-RT B.V. who are realizing the DSI process in which waste is processed in a thermal-chemical way, emission free, producing mainly syngas and biochar. The installations capacity is relatively small, so can be fully used for the relative small quantities of Caribbean islands. Because choices over waste handling on Bonaire are to be made this year, we aim for a feasibility study of the implementation of this new technology.
