Large-Scale – Custom Engineered Solutions

BioBox-E’s roots lie in the design and development of large, custom-built installations for centralized waste management—an area that still forms part of the company’s active engagements today. This journey began in 1981 in Switzerland, with the development of systems that processed slaughterhouse and food waste into protein-rich rinse water, requiring energy for sterilization. Long horizontal tanks were installed in old barns to methanize pig manure. The advantages of this type of reactor soon became evident, leading to the development of heterogeneous methanisation. This approach enabled highly concentrated digestion processes, even with substrates containing higher nitrogen levels. The technical and functional foundations of these large-scale static plants and the smaller modular BioBlox units are based on the same principles. The main differences lie in their size, flexibility, and intended user groups. The core principles of BioBox-E’s methanisation technology are outlined below.
